Narros de Saldueña
Village
Narros de Saldueña is a village of 102 inhabitants in the comarca of La Moraña, in the province of Ávila, crossed by the Merdero river and situated at 899 metres above sea level. Its name recalls the resettlers who came from Navarre and founded it: in 1250 the Relación of Cardinal Gil Torres already cites it as Nafarros de Salduenna, and the chains from the Navarre coat of arms borne on its blazon symbolise that origin. At the edge of the village, in the middle of the plain of La Moraña, stands the castle of the Duke of Montellano, built in the late 15th century by the Valderrábano family in brick and rammed earth: it is a fine example of a castle-palace of Mudéjar roots, with a rectangular plan and a great keep (Torre del Homenaje). The church of San Martín Obispo, with a basilical plan, was built at the same time.
