What to see and do in Poyales del Hoyo

Poyales del Hoyo
Village
Poyales del Hoyo is a village in the comarca of Arenas de San Pedro, in the province of Ávila, in the valley of the Tiétar river, on the slopes of the sierra de Gredos; its territory, of barely 338 hectares, is an enclave within the municipality of Arenas de San Pedro and one of the smallest in Spain. Its demonym, joyancos, comes from El Hoyo, one of the two medieval settlements that depended on Arenas de San Pedro; in 1658 Philip IV granted it the title of town, separating it from that jurisdiction so it could administer justice for crimes left unjudged because of floods on the Arbillas river. Flax growing left its mark in place names such as Los Enriaderos or Las Eras. With 498 inhabitants, it now lives off beekeeping, figs and olive oil, and has a museum devoted to bees.

Nature
Two watercourses cross the district and come down from the foothills of Gredos towards the Tiétar valley forming pools much frequented in summer. They water the fig trees and the olive groves that sustain the agriculture of the municipality.

Activity
On 20 January the village lights bonfires in the streets and holds its winter festival around the fire, a custom related to the luminarias repeated in several villages of southern Gredos.
