What to see and do in Yuncler

Yuncler
Village
Yuncler is a municipality in the comarca of La Sagra, in Toledo, with 5,275 inhabitants, at 534 m altitude, 25 km from Toledo and 42 from Madrid. Documented as Ocner in 1179, its name comes from junko, the Mozarabic term for rush. Its most valuable artistic feature is the church of Santa María Magdalena, which, together with the old Casa Grande, a late-19th-century farmhouse now converted into a hotel, forms the Plazuela de la Iglesia. It is accompanied by the fountain of the Cuatro Caños, built in 1700 and restored in 1889. The municipality is also home to the documentary centre of the Fundación Anselmo Lorenzo, the main archive of the Spanish anarchist movement. Its economy, traditionally agricultural, in the past also had some activity from ceramics companies.

Spring of los Cuatro Caños de Yuncler
Monument
The Cuatro Caños fountain of Yuncler (Toledo), also known among residents as the Pilar fountain, was built in granite in 1700 and restored in 1889. It is fed by a spring located a few metres from the old road to Madrid, and it is one of the most characteristic historic features of the town centre.
Anselmo Lorenzo Foundation
Curiosity
The Fundación de Estudios Libertarios Anselmo Lorenzo, known as FAL, is a cultural organisation created by the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo in 1987 and dependent on it, considered the largest foundation for the study of anarcho-syndicalism in Spain and one of the most important in the world. Although its main headquarters are in Madrid, Yuncler hosts the headquarters of its archive, the documentary centre that constitutes the main collection of the Spanish anarchist movement and an essential reference for historians of the labour movement. Its name honours Anselmo Lorenzo, an anarchist who took part in the creation of the first Spanish trade-union nucleus, and its aims are to recover the historical memory of Spanish anarchism and to spread it through cultural initiatives.
Ocner, the medieval name of Yuncler
Curiosity
The place name comes from junko, a Mozarabic term for reed, and it was precisely Mozarabic settlers who were the first documented inhabitants of the place. The town is recorded as Ocner in documents from 1179, 1197 and 1212, and later as Yunquer, before the current form, Yuncler, became fixed.
