What to see and do in Quero

Quero
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Mancha de Toledo, in the province of Toledo, of endorheic district dotted with hollows, plains and lagoons and crossed by the rivers Riánsares and Cigüela; its church of Santa María de la Asunción was raised around 1630, it has the chapel of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves and a windmill restored as a museum of traditional milling, and various scholars have proposed it as one of the settings of Don Quixote, a link it claims each year with Cervantine events.
Church of Santa María de la Asunción de Quero
Monument
The church of Santa María de la Asunción, in Quero, in La Mancha de Toledo, is the parish church built around 1630, the main historic building in this small town of La Mancha. With austere lines and limestone walls typical of the Habsburg period to which its current structure belongs, it has a single nave, tall and wide. The site had already been sacred and devoted to this invocation since at least the 13th century, long before the building preserved today was raised.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves
Monument
Ermita in the municipal area of Quero dedicated to the Marian invocation most deeply rooted in the town. It dates from the 17th century and has a rectangular plan with a plain facing, with a rear choir supported by a beam and two wooden corbels, protected by a railing also made of wood. It stands on the outskirts, to the north of the town, where a Visigothic tombstone was discovered during archaeological work. The Virgen de las Nieves is the patron saint of Quero: her patronal festivities are celebrated from 4 to 7 August, and on the last Sunday of August the image is carried in procession from the parish church to the ermita.
Mill-museum of Quero
Monument
Restored windmill, one of the emblematic ones in the town, whose restoration was inaugurated on 23 July 2006. The complex includes a museum installed in the silo, a cave-house with a distinctive layout dating from the 19th century, where the workings of traditional La Mancha milling are explained.
Quero, a setting of Don Quixote
Curiosity
Various scholars have proposed Quero as one of the possible settings of Cervantes's novel, and the town holds Cervantine events every year in support of that connection.
Basins and endorheic plains
Nature
The municipal area of Quero, in the comarca of La Mancha de Toledo, is characterised by an abundance of endorheic hollows and plains, especially in its agricultural areas to the east and south, and belongs to the hydrological region of the Mancha Húmeda. Among its lagoons, the Laguna Grande stands out, with brackish waters beside the town and a former salt-extraction site, now integrated into a wetland complex under a LIFE project; there is also the laguna of El Taray, to the north of the town centre, where the Riánsares river enters through a grille before discharging its waters into the Cigüela, as well as seasonal lagoons such as those of Vadancho, la Sangría and Los Carros.
