What to see and do in Alcañizo

Alcañizo
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Campana de Oropesa, in the province of Toledo, whose name appears in a document of Alfonso X of 1271 referring to the reed-lined stream beside which the settlement grew up, granted around 1332 by Alfonso XI to his Portuguese wife; it preserves the church of Santiago Apóstol and a seventeenth-century bridge over that stream, and its landscape alternates Mediterranean dehesa, the wooded pastureland, cereal fields and banks of century-old olive trees, holm oaks, poplars and willows.
Church of Santiago Apóstol de Alcañizo
Monument
The parish church of Alcañizo, the principal monument of this small town in the Campana de Oropesa.
Bridge of el arroyo de Alcañizo
Monument
Seventeenth-century bridge over the Alcañizo stream, which gives its name to the municipality (Toledo) and crosses the village, one of its most characteristic heritage features. According to Madoz's dictionary (1845), it was a stone bridge with three arches and brick abutments, fourteen varas long and three wide, which carried the crossing of the stream that divided the village into two quarters and only carried water when it rained.
Hermitage of la Virgen del Rosario de Alcañizo
Monument
The hermitage of the Virgen del Rosario of Alcañizo, in the Campana de Oropesa (Toledo), was inaugurated in 2002 in the presence of the then president of Castilla-La Mancha, José Bono, and the archbishop of Toledo, Francisco Álvarez Martínez, and is dedicated to the patroness of the town. It stands on the camino de Calera. Around it revolve a pilgrimage on the last weekend of May and the patronal festivities in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, held on the last weekend of August in the plaza Mayor of the village.
Dehesa and stream of Alcañizo
Nature
The landscape combines Mediterranean dehesa with cereal fields. Century-old olive trees, holm oaks, poplars and willows grow beside the stream, and partridges, hares, rabbits, storks and kestrels can be seen along its banks.
A stream among the reeds
Curiosity
The name appears in a document of Alfonso X dated 1271 referring to a stream where reeds grew, beside which the settlement later developed. Around 1332 Alfonso XI gave Alcañizo to his Portuguese wife.
