What to see and do in Torralba de Oropesa

Torralba de Oropesa
Village
Torralba de Oropesa, in La Campana de Oropesa (Toledo), has 186 inhabitants (2025) on a broad plain at 369 m above sea level. It was first called Torralba de Abajo, after a very old white tower, and later took the name Oropesa for belonging to that jurisdiction: in 1366 the town of Oropesa and its villages, including Torralba, passed to the lordship of García Álvarez de Toledo. The abundance of its groundwater earned it the saying parada y fonda, and Philip IV granted it the title of town in 1642. Together with Lagartera, it is a birthplace of the region's embroidery. Its most valuable monument is the hospital of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, an assistance building from 1508 declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), and granite verracos are scattered around the town, testifying to the Vettone presence.
Hospital of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción
Monument
The hospital of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a late Gothic assistance building dating from 1508, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) and considered the most valuable monument in Torralba de Oropesa (Toledo). According to Madoz's dictionary, the original hospital was founded by don Pedro de Oropesa, a native of the town, and served as a hospital for poor travellers and religious of observance. The building is arranged in several blocks around a square courtyard, and its main façade is built in Toledan brick-and-stone masonry with an ashlar plinth. Today it houses the town hall of the municipality.
Church of la Transfiguración
Monument
The parish church of Torralba de Oropesa, dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Lord, whose feast day is celebrated in August.
Verracos of Torralba de Oropesa
Monument
The verracos of Torralba de Oropesa are granite zoomorphic sculptures scattered through the streets of the municipality, evidence of the Vettone presence in the west of the province of Toledo. Some original examples are still preserved, though, being a symbol of the town, more recent replicas have also been created, which today stand alongside the old pieces scattered around the streets.
Torralba de Oropesa, a stopover and inn
Curiosity
The abundance of groundwater earned the town the saying parada y fonda, a place to stop and stay. Its name comes from Torralba de Abajo, in reference to an old white tower, and in 1642 Felipe IV granted it the title of villa.
