Saúca
Village
Saúca is a municipality in the northern mountains of Guadalajara made up of the settlements of Saúca and Jodra del Pinar, at 1,100 m of altitude, with 47 inhabitants (INE 2025) compared with 129 in the mid-19th century. Its parish church, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 16 June 1966, is one of the most valuable examples of Romanesque architecture in Guadalajara: it was built in the first half of the 13th century, possibly commissioned by the Bishopric of Sigüenza, and preserves a complete arcaded gallery, with nine round arches decorated with capitals in the Seguntine and Cistercian styles, including an Annunciation and a rampant lion and griffin symbolising the fight against evil. The nave, with a rectangular chancel rebuilt in the 16th century, is topped with corbels supporting the eaves.
