What to see and do in Villanueva de Argecilla

Villanueva de Argecilla
Village
Villanueva de Argecilla, in La Alcarria, province of Guadalajara, appears for the first time in history in a document from 1269 by the bishop of Sigüenza Lope Díaz de Haro, who founded a school in Atienza for children "who cannot study"; it is mentioned again in 1301, together with its dependency La Toviella, in a statistical record of the diocese's parishes, and in 1353 it figures among more than 150 villages in a list requested by King Pedro I the Cruel. With 30 inhabitants today, compared with 112 in the mid-19th century, it retains the church of San Blas and the hospital founded by doña Aldonza de Zayas. A book about its history gathers the village's old farming implements, from the plough and yokes to the sickle, the scythe and the winnowing fork.
