What to see and do in Fuentelahiguera de Albatages

Fuentelahiguera de Albatages
Village
Fuentelahiguera de Albatages, in La Campiña (Guadalajara), has 121 inhabitants (2025) at 901 m altitude and is documented since the 14th century. It formed part of the Común de Villa y Tierra de Uceda, a lordship of the archbishops of Toledo, until in 1610 it was sold to Cristóbal Gómez de Sandoval, first Duke of Uceda; it became depopulated shortly afterwards. According to legend, it took its name from the neighbouring depopulated town of Albatages, destroyed by termites, whose inhabitants moved here; the surname was added to the place name in 1916. Its church of San Andrés is a 17th-century baroque temple with a dome on pendentives that houses a crucified Christ in ivory, and in mid-September it celebrates the festivities of the Cristo de la Salud.
Church of San Andrés de Fuentelahiguera
Monument
Baroque church built in the early 17th century, when Fuentelahiguera de Albatages (Guadalajara) achieved its municipal autonomy, built in brick and rough ashlar. It has a single nave with a raised presbytery and a dome on pendentives over the crossing, decorated with Baroque plasterwork on vaults and friezes. It houses the so-called Cristo de la Salud, an 18th-century crucifix carved in ivory on an elephant tusk, of Philippine tradition. During the Spanish Civil War the church was destroyed and lost its altars, although the image of the Christ was recovered.
Hermitage of el Cristo de la Salud de Fuentelahiguera
Monument
Hermitage that gives its name to the mid-September festivities, held on the 14th and 15th in honour of the Santísimo Cristo de la Salud. It preserves a large 18th-century carving, worked in ivory on an enormous elephant tusk following Philippine tradition, which was thrown into the fire during a period of religious persecution and could be recovered with only slight damage.
The added name of Albatages
Curiosity
The municipality's official name incorporated the surname Albatages in 1916, with that year's reform of municipal nomenclature; before that it was simply called Fuentelahiguera, a locality documented since the 14th century. Local legend has it that, more than two centuries ago, between Usanos and present-day Fuentelahiguera there was a village called Albatages that, so it is said, was devoured by termites.
