Gajanejos
Village
Gajanejos is a municipality of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, beside the river Badiel and among hills of holm oak, oak and heather, with 51 inhabitants. Of uncertain origin, the village was destroyed several times: it was pulverised during the Peninsular War, as Galdós recounts in his Episodios Nacionales, and was razed again in the Civil War, when the Republican front settled in the area and its residents sheltered for fourteen days in the Picarón cave before being evacuated. After the battle of Guadalajara, in March 1937, it was destroyed once more and the Dirección General de Regiones Devastadas (the state agency for reconstructing war-devastated areas) rebuilt it beside the road. Its church of San Pedro Apóstol, damaged at that time, was rebuilt afterwards, and the festival is celebrated on 13 June.
