Pozo de Guadalajara
Village
A municipality in the comarca of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, set on the tableland that separates the valleys of the Henares and the Tajuña, among holm oak and Portuguese oak woods of the Monte de la Alcarria, with an economy traditionally based on dry-farmed cereals. Juan II of Castile separated it from the alfoz of Guadalajara in 1428 and in 1430 gave it to the Marquis of Santillana, who bequeathed it in his will to his son, Cardinal Mendoza. It retains the church of San Mateo Apóstol, from the 14th century, a 16th-century pillory, an 18th-century inn that served the old routes to the Baños de Trillo and La Isabela, and a waterwheel of Arab origin. It celebrates its patron saint on the weekend closest to 21 September, with bull runs and bullfighting festivities. It has 1,739 inhabitants (INE 2025).
