Pezuela de las Torres
Village
Pezuela de las Torres is a village of the Alcarria, in the comarca of the Cuenca del Henares, in the Community of Madrid, bordering Guadalajara, set at 900 metres of altitude on an extensive plateau. Its name comes from the abundant number of wells in the area, already documented in 1124 as Pizola; the addition of las Torres was taken in 1642 at the will of the first Count of Pezuela, Bartolomé Spínola. After the reconquest of Alcalá in 1118, it fell under the ecclesiastical and political jurisdiction of the archbishopric of Toledo. With about 1,000 inhabitants, the village bought its independence from Alcalá from Charles I in 1554 for more than a million maravedís, and preserves a seven-metre pillory, the church of the Assumption and the hermitage of San Benito.
