Fuentenovilla
Village
Fuentenovilla is a municipality of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, with 621 inhabitants, situated on what was once the Camino Real from Cuenca and Huete towards Alcalá de Henares and Madrid; the river Tajuña crosses its municipal area, spanned by a stone bridge. Once the Alcarria was reconquered in the 11th century, Alfonso VII included it in the alfoz of Zorita and it passed with it to the Order of Calatrava, until in 1538 it was bought by the marquis of Mondéjar; the lordship of the marquises of Mondéjar and Bélgida lasted until 1812. Its most notable piece is the 16th-century pillory, of Renaissance design, with a cylindrical column, a Corinthian capital decorated with lions' heads and a pyramidal top crowned by an iron cross, formerly used for corporal punishment. In May the Mayos festivity is still kept.
