What to see and do in Almonacid de Zorita

Almonacid de Zorita
Village
Almonacid de Zorita is a municipality in the La Alcarria comarca, in the province of Guadalajara, with 667 inhabitants (INE 2025), beside the river Tagus and its Bolarque reservoirs — the source of the Tagus-Segura water transfer — and the Bujeda reservoir. Its history goes back to the 11th century and is linked to the Order of Calatrava, from which it retains the title of villa; in the early 20th century the poet León Felipe lived there as an apothecary and wrote his first book there. It preserves the convent of la Concepción, the church of Santo Domingo de Silos and remains of the medieval wall. Beside the Tagus, the José Cabrera power plant, known as Zorita, was built between 1965 and 1968; the first Spanish nuclear power plant, it started up on 12 December 1968, operated for thirty-eight years until its closure in 2006, and is currently being decommissioned.
