Almoguera
Village
Almoguera is a municipality in La Alcarria, in Guadalajara, on the right bank of the Tagus, whose waters are held back by the Almoguera reservoir. Its coat of arms, as described by Pascual Madoz, shows three Moors' heads, two red flags bearing Arabic signs and, at the centre, a cross and a castle; the village's name has been explained, without certainty, as meaning “the cave”, owing to the abundance of natural and artificial caves in the area. The castle, built on a tuff rock in Arab times, was destroyed between 1444 and 1445 by the forces of Juan Ramírez de Guzmán, and on that same rock stands, free-standing, the tower of the church of Santa Cecilia, from the 16th century. It also preserves the hermitage of the Santísimo Cristo de las Injurias. It has 1,379 inhabitants.
