Albalate de Zorita
Village
Albalate de Zorita is a municipality in La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, with 1,148 inhabitants (INE 2025), at the foot of the Sierra de Altomira. Its name comes from the Arabic al-balat, 'the causeway', and from the former alfoz of Zorita, to which it belonged from the late 11th century, after the conquest of the Taifa of Toledo by Alfonso VI; in 1175 Alfonso VIII placed the castle of Zorita in the hands of the Order of Calatrava. It gained the title of villa in the late 14th or early 15th century, and passed through the hands of the families of the princes of Éboli and Mendoza until 1812. Its church of San Andrés, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1992, preserves a 16th-century Gothic façade, a baptismal font from 1545 and a retable by Juan Alonso Pedroso (1703-1707); in February the botargas of San Blas are celebrated.
