What to see and do in Villar de Olalla

Villar de Olalla
Village
Villar de Olalla is a municipality in the Serranía Media, 9 km from the provincial capital of Cuenca, with the hamlets of Barbalimpia and Villarejo Seco and 1,575 inhabitants according to the 2025 INE census. Its uneven terrain is softened by the río Júcar and its tributary the San Martín, with the Sierra del Bosque (1,091 m) marking the boundary with the capital; the village stands at 924 m. There are Bronze Age sites on the Monte de Los Escalones and Roman remains beside the rivers, including the Roman bridge of Villar de Olalla, now preserved only in a photograph at the Cuenca Archaeological Museum. It is believed that the Visigoths founded the settlement on the Cerro de San Lorenzo, today crowned by the 16th-century church of la Natividad de Nuestra Señora. The main festival is celebrated around 8 September.
