Valdemorillo de la Sierra
Village
Valdemorillo de la Sierra is a municipality in the comarca of Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja, in the province of Cuenca, with 49 inhabitants according to the 2025 INE census, at 1,263 metres above sea level amid pine woods, oak groves, holm oak woods and savin juniper stands, beside the río Guadazaón, whose Arabic name, Wadi Saaron, means 'valley of the cold'. Its first Arab settlers established themselves after the Reconquest in a safer location, as shown by burials oriented towards Mecca; in 1175 they rose up against the caliph of Córdoba, and in 1178, after the fall of Cuenca, the territory passed into Christian hands. It belonged to the Marquisate of Moya from 1480 and reached its greatest splendour in 1580, with 580 inhabitants. Its festival of San Roque is celebrated from 14 to 19 August, with the so-called paseo de Serranos.
