Talayuelas
Village
Talayuelas is a municipality in the comarca of Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja, on the eastern border of the province of Cuenca with Valencia; it has 873 inhabitants (2025) and stands at 991 m above sea level, near the Talayuelas canyon. Its name may derive from the Greek telea and helas, or from the Arabic word thala, meaning fortress, from which atalaya (watchtower) would also come. In March 1956 two F-86 Sabre fighter-bombers flying from Valencia to Getafe crashed in the sierra. The canyon, a geological formation of red earth known as the Plaza de Toros, opens beside the limestone formations of Las Callejuelas. The village preserves the church of la Asunción and the hermitage of San Antonio, both from the 17th century, and a former fire station from 1945 with a parabolic vault of reinforced concrete.
