Fuentes
Village
Fuentes is a municipality in the comarca of Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja, in the province of Cuenca, with 462 inhabitants (INE 2025), about nineteen kilometres from the provincial capital, at the head of the Río de las Moscas. Repopulated after the conquest of Cuenca by Alfonso VIII in 1177 by Christians from Extremadura, it obtained the title of villa by Royal Privilege in 1557. In its municipal area is the Fuentes lagoon complex, with the Laguna del Ojo de la Corva, the Laguna de los Cedazos and the Laguna Negra. Works on the Madrid-Cuenca-Valencia high-speed rail line uncovered in 2007 the Lo Hueco site, from the Upper Cretaceous some seventy million years ago, from which more than 8,000 fossils have been extracted, among them the titanosaur Lohuecotitan pandafilandi.
