What to see and do in Valsalobre

Valsalobre
Village
Valsalobre is a municipality in the Serranía Alta district (Cuenca), with 17 inhabitants (INE 2025) and 38.08 km², founded in the 13th century, during the Christian repopulation of the Tierra de Beteta, around a salt deposit that served as a tithe-paying settlement during the Medieval and Early Modern periods. In 1295 Alfonso X the Wise granted the bishop of Cuenca the salt-making wells of Valtablao and Valsalobre, whose production, highly valued in the 15th and 16th centuries for the merino sheep herds, made the place one of the first summer pastures of the Mesta. Its municipal area contains the Serrezuela de Valsalobre natural monument, declared in 2003 over 734.5 hectares of karst formations that hold the largest number of sinkholes in Spain, as well as one of the main distribution areas of the Spanish moon moth.

Nature
An area of 734.5 hectares declared a natural monument on 13 May 2003 for its karst landforms. It brings together the largest number of shafts in the whole of Spain, as well as large limestone pavements, ruiniform relief and galleries with a great variety of speleothems.
