What to see and do in El Herrumblar

El Herrumblar
Village
El Herrumblar is a municipality in La Manchuela Conquense, in the southeast of Cuenca, whose territory descends from the plains of the west to the steep sector drained by the Cabriel river, with the Mortanchinos ravine as a notable feature. Already settled in the Bronze Age, according to the remains at Cerro Chavo, and with Iberian and Roman sites in its surroundings, the present-day settlement arose, according to oral tradition, from the union of several neighbouring hamlets — Los Noguerones, Garadén, El Pino Casablanca — whose inhabitants moved here because of the proximity of watercourses. It became independent from Iniesta in 1782, with about a hundred residents. It preserves the hermitage of San Julián, from 1680, and that of Nuestra Señora de la Estrella, from 1777, and its patronal festivities include wine tastings celebrating the start of the grape harvest.

Monument
A hermitage built in 1777 and dedicated to the patron saint of the town, next to the parish complex.
Hermitage of San Julián de El Herrumblar
Monument
Hermitage of San Julián, built in 1680 next to the municipal cemetery of El Herrumblar (Cuenca), dedicated to the village's winter patron saint. Its festivity is held on 28 January with a procession to the hermitage and a tasting of dishes prepared by the local women's associations; it is the oldest winter festivity in the village, predating the summer celebrations added later to attract visitors.

Nature
The municipal district descends from the plains of the west to the steep eastern sector drained by the River Cabriel, with the Mortanchinos ravine as a notable spot.
The Chozo of El Herrumblar
Activity
El Chozo is a tradition of El Herrumblar held every Easter Sunday. Its origin goes back to the farewell given to the young conscripts setting off for military service: today it is the year's young men and women who decorate a street of the village with small pines and arches covered in branches and tissue-paper flowers, made beforehand by the mothers and women of the village. At the end of the street a shelter is put up where the Christ Child is placed. The event represents the procession of the Encounter of the Resurrection: the conscripts bring the image of the Virgin from the church, accompanied by the local confraternities and the town band, in an encounter that symbolises removing her mourning garb before returning her to the church.
Festivities of la Virgen de la Estrella de El Herrumblar
Activity
The festivities of the Virgen de la Estrella are held in El Herrumblar (Cuenca) on 8 and 9 September, since time immemorial at grape-harvest time. On 8 September a processional parade takes place through the streets of the village, preceded by a floral offering in which the whole community takes part. On the 9th the procession goes from the church to the local cooperative, where the Ladies of the festivities offer a basket of grapes freshly cut from the vineyards and a tasting of local wines is served, in an event known as the Honorary Treading. The Queens of the festivities and the town band also take part.
