What to see and do in Casas de Benítez

Casas de Benítez
Village
Casas de Benítez is a municipality in the comarca of La Manchuela Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, with 872 inhabitants, beside the Júcar river and the Tajo-Segura water transfer. It is divided between the main settlement and several hamlets: El Carmen, where the monastery of Nuestra Señora del Socorro was founded in 1572, visited by Saint Teresa of Ávila in 1580 and linked to the memory of the hermit Catalina de Cardona, whose cave is preserved there; Puente de Don Juan, beside the Júcar, with the Palacio de los Gosálvez, in 19th-century Versailles style and declared a national monument; and La Losa, in the river's water-meadow, where scenes from Pedro Almodóvar's film Volver were shot. The municipal area also contains the river canyon of the hoz del Batanejo, barely passable except from the water.
Monastery of Nuestra Señora del Socorro
Monument
Monastery founded in 1572 in the hamlet of El Carmen. Saint Teresa of Ávila visited it in February 1580. It was founded by the noblewoman Catalina de Cardona, who had withdrawn to lead an eremitic life in a cave located next to the monastery itself; today only the remains of that building survive, close to the founder's cave.
Cave of Doña Catalina de Cardona
Nature
A cave in the outlying village of El Carmen associated with the memory of Catalina de Cardona, the celebrated 16th-century hermit linked to the founding of the monastery.
Batanejo gorge
Nature
The Batanejo gorge is a little-known river canyon in the Manchuela Conquense (Casas de Benítez, Cuenca), related to the Júcar canyons. It remains virtually untouched by human hands and can only be travelled by water. At around 600 metres of altitude, it brings together much of the area's native flora and enjoys a singular, exclusive microclimate.
Los Nuevos Agro-environmental Centre
Nature
A space devoted to native flora and organic market gardening, set around a former 20th-century hydroelectric mill on the banks of the Júcar River, about two kilometres from La Losa. The building was originally a flour mill, converted into a hydroelectric power station in the early 20th century; the plant brought electric light to this part of the Ribera del Júcar around 1900. Today it functions as an interpretation centre, with a route along the riverbank and its varieties of native plants.
