What to see and do in Casas de Guijarro

Casas de Guijarro
Village
A municipality in the comarca of La Manchuela Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, one of the smallest in area with barely 8.20 square kilometres and 105 inhabitants (INE, 2025). In the shade of eight century-old pines, it evokes the small settlements that once populated this part of Cuenca; just 3 kilometres away lies a small wood noted for its sunsets. Its Mayor street brings together the town hall, the church of the Dulce Nombre de Jesús and the stations of the Via Crucis; the building, of masonry with ashlar corners and topped by a bell-gable, holds a wrought-iron lamp made by Emiliano de la Casa Mondéjar, a craftsman from the municipality itself. Together with six other sparsely populated villages, it forms part of the area of the Denominación de Origen La Mancha. Its festivities are celebrated from 19 January to 3 May.
Church of el Dulce Nombre de Jesús de Casas de Guijarro
Monument
A church built in rubble masonry with ashlar corners and topped by a traditional bell-gable, under the invocation of the Holy Name of Jesus. It houses a large wrought-iron lamp made by Emiliano de la Casa Mondéjar, a local resident. As early as 1847, Pascual Madoz's dictionary recorded the existence of this church.

Curiosity
With barely 8.20 square kilometres and just over a hundred inhabitants, Casas de Guijarro is one of the smallest municipalities by area in the province of Cuenca. In the mid-19th century it had 210 inhabitants, and Madoz's dictionary described it as set upon a rise he called “a balcony with a wall,” surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. It belongs to the La Mancha Designation of Origin (DO), and preserves the church of the Holy Name of Jesus, with a wrought-iron lamp made by local resident Emiliano de la Casa Mondéjar. On the outskirts grow eight centuries-old pines, and three kilometres away there is a pine wood known for its sunsets.
