What to see and do in Vindel

Vindel
Village
Vindel is a municipality in the La Alcarria Conquense district, in the province of Cuenca, with barely 19 inhabitants (INE 2025), in a valley of dense pine and holm oak woods whose stream flows into the río Guadiela. Its territory culminates at the La Rocha peak, 1,249 metres high, amid a landscape of pine forests and aromatic plants already described by Madoz; its parish church of the Assumption is in Isabelline style. In 1804 an earthquake interrupted the stream's course, and that same year an epidemic reduced the number of households from 128 to 35. Lamb caldereta and salted gachas are typical dishes, and the patron saint festivities of Santa Ana and San Roque, on the last weekend of July, are celebrated with bands and meals in the poplar grove by the río Vindel.

Monument
A parish church in Isabelline style, the main monument of this small town in the north of the Alcarria of Cuenca.
The 1804 earthquake
Curiosity
In April 1804 an earthquake caused two hillsides to collapse, blocking the course of the stream that runs through the municipality of Vindel; residents found the next morning that the streambed had stopped flowing. That same year an epidemic reduced the population from 128 to 35 households.
La Rocha Peak
Nature
Pico La Rocha is the highest point in the municipal territory of Vindel, at 1,249 metres above sea level. It rises in a landscape already described by Madoz in the 19th century as covered with pines, holm oaks, gum rockroses, sage-leaved rockroses, strawberry trees, rosemary, lavender and other shrubs, with countless medicinal plants.
Festivities of Santa Ana y San Roque de Vindel
Activity
The patronal festivities of Vindel (Alcarria Conquense) are dedicated to Saint Anne and Saint Roch and are held on the last weekend of July, with orchestras and communal meals in the poplar grove beside the Vindel river.
