Portalrubio de Guadamejud
Village
A municipality in the district of La Alcarria Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, at 817 metres above sea level and 2 km from the Guadamejud river, which lends its name to the second part of the village's own. It is dominated by the Sierra Gorda, a 1,038-metre peak from which the neighbouring villages, the Buendía reservoir and, on clear days, even the lights of Madrid and the Sierra de Guadarrama can be seen; a path allows one to climb to its summit. Among its traditions is the pilgrimage that climbs on foot to the Cabezo hill, 879 metres high, crowned by a Celtic cross, and on its territory lies the cave known as the Cueva de los Moros. It once had as many as 806 inhabitants in the 1940s, its historic peak; today it has only 35 (INE 2025).
