Villanueva de Guadamejud
Village
Villanueva de Guadamejud is a municipality in the district of La Alcarria Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, located near Huete in a flat hollow among mountains, of which it was a hamlet until its exemption by Philip II in 1597. It has 59 inhabitants (INE 2025), compared with 326 in the mid-19th century; it is a rural population whose numbers fall in winter and rise in summer with the return of those who emigrated. The village has caves, some hand-carved and others natural, used for the artisan making of wine. Its church of San Pedro ad Víncula, from the 16th and 17th centuries, preserves a Mudejar coffered ceiling running the length of the nave and a gilded main altarpiece from 1707; on the outskirts stands the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Guadamejud, beside a group of caves.
