Pedro Ruiz González, Baroque painter Curiosity · Arandilla del Arroyo, La Alcarria Conquense, Cuenca Image of Arandilla del Arroyo, not of the place itself. The baroque painter Pedro Ruiz González (Arandilla del Arroyo, around 1640 - Madrid, 1706) trained in Madrid with Juan Antonio Frías y Escalante and, more decisively, with Juan Carreño de Miranda, whose influence marked his later work. Although his first biographer, Antonio Palomino, held him to have been born in Madrid, it is documented that he came into the world in Arandilla. He also worked as a painting valuer at court, and among his surviving works stands out the small canvas Jesucristo en la noche de su Pasión, today in the Museo del Prado. He died in Madrid in 1706 and was buried in the church of San Millán, for which he had painted three pictures that were lost in a fire in 1720. Arandilla del Arroyo is today one of the least populated municipalities in the province of Cuenca. Photo: Diego Delso (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Arandilla del Arroyo
