What to see and do in Paterna del Madera

Paterna del Madera
Village
Paterna del Madera is a municipality in the comarca of Sierra del Segura (Albacete), situated at 1,130 metres in the valley of the Madera river, a tributary of the Mundo, at the centre of the former Sierra de Alcaraz; it took its current surname in 1916, having previously been called simply Paterna. Its territory, covered by Corsican and Scots pine forests where deer, wild goats and golden eagles live, includes the Calar de la Osera and monumental trees such as the Pino Gordo del Toril and the Tejo Viejo. It comprises several hamlets, among them Batán del Puerto, Cortijo de Tortas and El Encebrico, and a local association organises the Matanza (pig slaughter festival) and the Semana Gastronómica every year. Some thirty waymarked trails of between ten and twenty-five kilometres, created by that same association, run through its calares and valleys.
