What to see and do in Molinicos

Molinicos
Village
Molinicos is a municipality in the comarca of Sierra del Segura, in the province of Albacete, with 813 inhabitants across 16 population entities, whose territory, partly within the Parque Natural de los Calares del Río Mundo y de la Sima, rises to the 1,629 metres of the Pico Gallinero. The settlement, known after the Middle Ages as Morote, took its name from the 17th- and 18th-century flour mills on the stream of the same name, over which a medieval aqueduct survives. From its Arab past, in the 12th century, watchtowers and castles endure, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), witnesses to the frontier between Christians and Muslims, today followed by a route linking the watchtowers. Separated from Ayna in 1564, it houses the only mycological museum in Castilla-La Mancha, with more than 2,500 documented varieties.

Monument
A route linking the surviving watchtowers at Torre-Pedro, Morcillar, La Vegallera, Cortijo León and Molinicos itself, evidence of the valley's medieval surveillance system.

Mycological Museum of Molinicos
Monument
A centre devoted to the fungi of the sierra, the only one of its kind in Castilla-La Mancha, located on the plaza Mayor of Molinicos, right in the centre of the town. More than two thousand five hundred varieties of mushrooms have been recorded in the municipality. The building that houses it, the former town hall known as the Casa del Nizcalo, was built in the mid-19th century, shortly after the municipality became independent, paid for with the felling of pines from the Dehesa de Torre-Pedro. It has had very varied uses, from town hall to school or library; in 1959 a four-faced clock tower was added, and in the early 21st century, after a refurbishment that in 2004 modernised its mechanism, its interior was fitted out as a museum.

Nature

Popular festivities of Molinicos
Activity
The main festivities of Molinicos, with bull runs and popular events that bring together residents and visitors at the end of summer, from 30 August to 3 September, in honour of Nuestra Señora del Carmen. Bullfighting events form a deeply rooted part of the municipality's identity, which also holds bull runs during the patronal festivities of San José in March and in the hamlet of La Vegallera around the Inmaculada Concepción in August.
The independence of Molinicos
Curiosity
Molinicos separated from Ayna as an independent entity in 1564; it applied for its own parish in 1789 and received its first parish priest in 1791. In 1845 it signed the boundary agreement with Elche de la Sierra.
The saffron milk-cap mushrooms of the pine forests
Food and drink
The pine woods of the sierra fill in autumn with saffron milk caps, which are gathered by hand and prepared on the griddle with garlic and parsley or stewed with game meat. Local mushroom enthusiasm extends to more than a hundred usable species.
