What to see and do in Salobre

Salobre
Village
Salobre is a municipality in the comarca of Sierra de Alcaraz y Campo de Montiel, in the province of Albacete, situated 95 kilometres from the provincial capital. The municipal area, crossed by the N-322 road and by the CM-412 towards Riópar, marks the transition between the Campo de Montiel, to the west, and the Sierra de Alcaraz, to the east. Its name recalls the salt-water wells of the town, a legacy of ancient seas; it is crossed by the Salobre, Ojuelo and Angorrillo rivers, and its altitude ranges from 780 to 1,545 metres, with the Cerro de la Atalaya, at 1,452 m, as its highest point. It has 442 inhabitants (INE 2025) and is the birthplace of the politician José Bono.

Rivers of Salobre
Nature
The municipal area of Salobre is crossed by three small watercourses: the río del Ojuelo and the río de Angorrillo, whose confluence gives rise to the río Salobre itself, in turn a tributary of the Guadalmena. The relief of the municipality, in the Sierra de Alcaraz and Campo de Montiel, ranges between 780 metres next to the río Salobre and 1,545 metres at its southern end.
The brackish wells that gave the village its name
Curiosity
Close to the town there are wells of salt water, a geological legacy of ancient seas, which explain the municipality's place name.
José Bono, native of Salobre
Curiosity
The politician José Bono, president of Castilla-La Mancha and later minister and president of the Congress of Deputies, was born in Salobre on 14 December 1950. A PSOE militant, he presided over the region for six consecutive terms (1983-2004), was Minister of Defence (2004-2006) and president of the Congress (2008-2011). In 2000 he lost the PSOE's general secretaryship to José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero by just nine votes.
Grass-pea gachas
Food and drink
Grass-pea flour toasted and worked with water, oil, garlic and paprika until a thick paste is obtained, served with pieces of belly pork or chorizo. For centuries it was the subsistence dish of the high villages of the sierra.
