What to see and do in Peñascosa

Peñascosa
Village
Peñascosa is a municipality in the comarca of Sierra de Alcaraz y Campo de Montiel, in the province of Albacete, whose town centre, at 1,169 m, is the highest in the province. Its extensive municipal area, of 189.26 km², brings together hamlets such as Zorío, Cerroblanco, Pesebre, Cañada Seca and Arteaga de Arriba and de Abajo. It separated from Alcaraz in 1851 and its parish church is San Miguel Arcángel, built in the late 19th century with stone from the area known as El Molar. Its coat of arms features the Pino del Roble, a singular tree born of the symbiosis of an oak and a pine, and its patronal festivals are known for their bull runs. Emigration in the 1960s and 1970s left a mostly retired population. It has 329 inhabitants (INE 2025).

Activity
Patron saint festivities of the municipality, known for their encierros and bullfighting events. They are held on 29 September in honour of San Miguel Arcángel, and the encierros and bullfights in the bullring are their main draw, famous throughout the province of Albacete. They are steeped in the ancestral prestige and bullfighting tradition typical of the Sierra de Alcaraz.
