What to see and do in Masegoso

Masegoso
Village
Masegoso is a municipality in the comarca of Sierra de Alcaraz y Campo de Montiel, in the province of Albacete, with 117 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated at 1,200 metres of altitude and formed by the hamlets of Ituero, Cilleruelo and Peñarrubia. In its territory lies the Monumento Natural de la Laguna del Arquillo, 522 hectares of holm oak groves and cereal fields sheltering deer and wild goats; the Masegoso river used to flow through the municipality but is now dry. Its parish church is dedicated to San Benito Abad, whose feast is celebrated on 11 July, and in October its pilgrimage carries the Virgen del Rosario up to Ituero, where halfway along the pilgrims are offered a snack and vítores (traditional cheers) are sung asking for protection for the sowing.
Church of San Benito de Masegoso
Monument
The municipality's parish church, historically a dependency of San Miguel de Alcaraz, dedicated to Saint Benedict the Abbot, the local patron saint.
Hermitage of el Santo Cristo de Cilleruelo
Monument
A small hermitage in the outlying village of Cilleruelo, one of the three that make up the municipal district of Masegoso along with Ituero and Peñarrubia.
Natural Monument of the Arquillo Lagoon
Nature
The Monumento Natural de la Laguna del Arquillo lies in the Sierra de Alcaraz, in the municipal area of Masegoso (Albacete), with a protected area of 522 hectares and a peripheral protection zone of 3,757 hectares. Its waters, of great quality and changing in tone between whitish and blue depending on the time of day, are covered with water spikes and water lilies, with grasses and rush meadows on the margins. It is a refuge for Saint Anthony's little frog, the leprous terrapin, deer and wild mountain goats. At 40-50 metres from the wetland there are caves with rock paintings, and the area forms part of the Route of Don Quixote; it is reached via the Masegoso road or via Los Chospes.
Pilgrimage of la Virgen del Rosario de Masegoso
Activity
A pilgrimage that carries the image of the Virgen del Rosario from Masegoso to the hamlet of Ituero, as part of the October patronal festivities, with the majority participation of residents from both villages. Halfway along the route, the pilgrims are offered a picnic snack among holm oaks, a moment when cheers are sung to the Virgin and prayers are offered for the coming year's sowing.
Masegoso, from a thousand residents to little more than a hundred
Curiosity
Madoz's dictionary recorded 1,020 inhabitants in 1848; today the municipality, at 1,200 metres above sea level, barely exceeds a hundred residents.
