What to see and do in Villaverde de Guadalimar

Villaverde de Guadalimar
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Sierra de Alcaraz y Campo de Montiel, in the province of Albacete, where the river Guadalimar rises from the confluence of the Tejo and Vaqueriza streams; it was called Villaverde de Ambas Aguas, after the two rivers that water it, one fresh and one brackish, until the reform of the gazetteer in 1916. It preserves the ruins of a Franciscan convent founded in 1477, the salt pans of El Salero, worked at least since the thirteenth century, and the rock formation of Los Picarazos, beside which grows a century-old yew.
Convent of San Francisco de Villaverde de Guadalimar
Monument
A Franciscan convent founded with papal authorisation in 1477 and occupied by the friars from 1486. It came to be highly influential in the sierra, but today only ruins remain: its stones were reused in the 1940s for local buildings.
The Salero of Villaverde
Monument
Former salt pans worked since at least the 13th century and closed in the early 1980s, which preserve their crystallisation basins and salt stores.
Los Picarazos
Nature
A geological formation at the foot of the Pico de la Sarga whose rocks suggest the silhouettes of monks. Beside it grows a centuries-old yew, one of the few left in the sierra.
Peaks of the Padrón
Nature
The three great summits of the municipal district: El Padrón at 1,769 metres, El Padroncillo at 1,587 and La Piedra del Cambrón at 1,552, in the very heart of the Sierra de Alcaraz.
Source of the Guadalimar River
Nature
The Guadalimar river, also called the río Colorado, rises at the foot of the Sarga peak (1,770 metres) in the Sierra de Alcaraz, in the municipality of Villaverde de Guadalimar (Albacete), at the confluence of the Tejo stream and the Vaqueriza stream. From here it flows southwest, enters the province of Jaén near Siles and crosses the regions of the Sierra de Segura, the Condado de Jaén, Sierra Morena and La Loma before flowing into the Guadalquivir, in the municipality of Jabalquinto, after a course of about 167 kilometres. It is the second-longest tributary of the Guadalquivir after the Genil. Its Arabic name, al-Wadi'l Ahmar, means “red river”, for the reddish tone of its waters.
Cross of El Pernales
Curiosity
Wooden cross erected at the site of the Arroyo del Tejo, near Villaverde de Guadalimar, in the Sierra de Alcaraz, where on 31 August 1907 the bandits El Pernales and El Niño del Arahal died while fleeing towards Valencia. The Civil Guard, commanded by Lieutenant Haro, surprised them eating in an olive grove; after a shootout between both sides, the two men fell dead from gunfire, and their weapons, cash and documents were seized. El Pernales, who that same year had tried unsuccessfully to flee to America, was buried in the cemetery of Alcaraz.
Villaverde de Ambas Aguas
Curiosity
The municipality was called Villaverde de Anbas Aguas after the two rivers that water it, one fresh and one brackish, and took its present name in the place-name reform of 1916.
Festivities of San Mateo de Villaverde de Guadalimar
Activity
The patron saint festivities of San Mateo in Villaverde de Guadalimar (Sierra de Alcaraz and Campo de Montiel, Albacete) are held during the third week of September, with the 21st being the feast day of the patron saint. Their main attraction is the traditional bull-running encierros through the streets of the village, which draw numerous visitors.
The honey of the Sierra de Alcaraz
Food and drink
The hives scattered over the mountains at the head of the Guadalimar produce monofloral honeys of rosemary, thyme and lavender, and dark-tasting holm-oak honeydews; they sweeten the comarca's hojuelas, mostillos and cheeses.
