Source of the Guadalimar River

Nature · Villaverde de Guadalimar, Sierra de Alcaraz y Campo de Montiel, Albacete

The Guadalimar river, also called the río Colorado, rises at the foot of the Sarga peak (1,770 metres) in the Sierra de Alcaraz, in the municipality of Villaverde de Guadalimar (Albacete), at the confluence of the Tejo stream and the Vaqueriza stream. From here it flows southwest, enters the province of Jaén near Siles and crosses the regions of the Sierra de Segura, the Condado de Jaén, Sierra Morena and La Loma before flowing into the Guadalquivir, in the municipality of Jabalquinto, after a course of about 167 kilometres. It is the second-longest tributary of the Guadalquivir after the Genil. Its Arabic name, al-Wadi'l Ahmar, means “red river”, for the reddish tone of its waters.
