What to see and do in Cotillas

Cotillas
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Sierra de Alcaraz y Campo de Montiel, in the province of Albacete, incorporated in 1477, together with Riópar, into the holdings the Manrique family had in the range; its name comes from the Arabic Al Qutillas, beneath the hill, in reference to the houses set below the castle of La Yedra, today in ruins. It has a rustic-looking parish church probably raised in the sixteenth century and, in its surroundings, the recreational area of La Majada del Soto and the Arroyofrío reservoir.
Castle of la Yedra de Cotillas
Monument
The ruins of a medieval fortress on top of the hill overlooking the village, occupied during the Muslim period in the comarca.
Church of Cotillas
Monument
A rustic-looking parish church, probably built in the 16th century and well preserved, an example of the religious architecture of the sierra.
Arroyofrío reservoir
Nature
A small reservoir some six kilometres from the village, with picnic areas and footpaths around it.
La Majada del Soto
Nature
La Majada del Soto is a recreational area located about three kilometres from the town centre of Cotillas (Sierra de Alcaraz and Campo de Montiel, Albacete), amid unspoilt nature and next to a spring. It has barbecue areas, a bathing area in the stream and an old washhouse.
Al Qutillas, below the hill
Curiosity
The place name comes from the Arabic Al Qutillas, which can be translated as below the hill, alluding to the position of the village beneath the castle. With 123 inhabitants it is one of the least populated municipalities in the province.
The incorporation of Cotillas into the mountain lordship
Historical milestone
The Catholic Monarchs completed in 1477 the configuration of the Manrique domain in the sierra with the incorporation of Cotillas and Riópar, which joined Villapalacios, Bienservida and Villaverde under a single seigneurial jurisdiction.
