Cross of El Pernales Curiosity · Villaverde de Guadalimar, Sierra de Alcaraz y Campo de Montiel, Albacete Image of Villaverde de Guadalimar, not of the place itself. Wooden cross erected at the site of the Arroyo del Tejo, near Villaverde de Guadalimar, in the Sierra de Alcaraz, where on 31 August 1907 the bandits El Pernales and El Niño del Arahal died while fleeing towards Valencia. The Civil Guard, commanded by Lieutenant Haro, surprised them eating in an olive grove; after a shootout between both sides, the two men fell dead from gunfire, and their weapons, cash and documents were seized. El Pernales, who that same year had tried unsuccessfully to flee to America, was buried in the cemetery of Alcaraz.
