Natural Monument of the Arquillo Lagoon Nature · Masegoso, Sierra de Alcaraz y Campo de Montiel, Albacete Image of Masegoso, not of the place itself. The Monumento Natural de la Laguna del Arquillo lies in the Sierra de Alcaraz, in the municipal area of Masegoso (Albacete), with a protected area of 522 hectares and a peripheral protection zone of 3,757 hectares. Its waters, of great quality and changing in tone between whitish and blue depending on the time of day, are covered with water spikes and water lilies, with grasses and rush meadows on the margins. It is a refuge for Saint Anthony's little frog, the leprous terrapin, deer and wild mountain goats. At 40-50 metres from the wetland there are caves with rock paintings, and the area forms part of the Route of Don Quixote; it is reached via the Masegoso road or via Los Chospes.
