On 25 December 1495, in the same area as the previous year's Castilian defeat, the troops of Alonso Fernández de Lugo defeated the Guanches in the clash that ended the military conquest of Tenerife, the last island in the archipelago to be subdued. The adelantado vowed to build a church on the site, around which grew the settlement that took the name La Victoria.
