What to see and do in Agaete

Agaete
Village
Fishing town in northwestern Gran Canaria, founded in 1481 after the conquest, with an inland valley of fertile ravines that contrasts with its cliff-lined coast. Puerto de las Nieves, its fishing settlement, maintains the regular ferry connection with Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Dedo de Dios
Nature
Roque Partido, a basalt formation facing Puerto de las Nieves that for decades was the natural symbol of Gran Canaria for its finger-like shape pointing skyward. Tropical storm Delta broke off its upper joint on the afternoon of 28 November 2005, leaving it with its current, blunter appearance.
Parque Natural de Tamadaba
Nature
Forested massif of Canary pine reaching 1,421.9 meters of altitude, shared with the municipality of Artenara and protected as a Special Area of Conservation of the Natura 2000 Network. The Tamadaba massif is one of the three territorial units -along with the Tejeda basin and the Barranco Hondo- that make up the Cultural Landscape of Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 7 July 2019 across the municipalities of Artenara, Tejeda, Gáldar and Agaete.
Puerto de las Nieves
Nature
Fishing settlement of Agaete with natural pools carved into the lava and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's top heritage-protection category). It is the departure point for the ferry linking Gran Canaria with Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Café del Valle de Agaete
Food and drink
The Valle de Agaete, on the Los Berrazales estates, is home to the only Arabica coffee plantation grown commercially in Spain and in the European Union, with evidence of cultivation since the 19th century and an annual output of around 1,500 kilos. It is, together with São Jorge in the Azores, one of the few places in Europe where coffee grows.
Fiestas de la Virgen de las Nieves y Bajada de la Rama
Curiosity
Patronal festivities of Agaete, held from 5 to 17 August, with the Bajada de la Rama as the central event: a procession descends from the Tamadaba pine forest to the sea, striking the ground with pine branches, in a rite of aboriginal roots linked to petitioning for rain. Declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in 1972.
