What to see and do in Santa María de Guía de Gran Canaria

Santa María de Guía de Gran Canaria
Village
Coastal municipality in northern Gran Canaria that combines cliffs, laurel-forest highlands and pine-forested summits. Its old town preserves colonial houses such as the Casa del Canónigo Gordillo and the Casa de los Quintana.
Cenobio de Valerón
Historical milestone
Collective aboriginal granary cut into the Valerón gorge, with more than 350 artificial chambers spread across several levels of an almost vertical wall, used until the conquest to store grain under family ownership seals. The name 'cenobio' (monastery) reflects a mistaken 19th-century idea that confused it with a convent where young nobles were confined.
Iglesia Matriz de Santa María de Guía
Monument
The villa's main church, which preserves several carvings by the Gran Canaria sculptor José Luján Pérez, one of the central figures in 18th-century Canarian religious imagery.
Queso de flor de Guía
Food and drink
Artisanal cheese made with Canarian sheep's milk curdled with thistle flower, protected by a designation of origin based in Santa María de Guía. The Fiesta del Queso, on the last weekend of April, brings together producers from across the comarca for tastings and demonstrations.
Fiesta de Las Marías
Curiosity
Pilgrimage held on the third weekend of September in memory of an episode from 1811 in which, according to local tradition, the Virgin's intervention spared the crops from a locust plague.
