Las gavias, agricultura en tierra árida Curiosity · Antigua, Fuerteventura, Las Palmas Image of Antigua, not of the place itself. The gavia is a pre-Hispanic farming system that survived the conquest and is found only on Fuerteventura and Lanzarote: plots enclosed by earth walls ("trastones") that hold back run-off water and the silt carried by floods, making it possible to grow cereals and legumes in a territory with almost no rainfall. The municipality of Antigua, around settlements such as Casillas de Morales, preserves good examples of this agricultural landscape.
