What to see and do in Pina de Ebro

Pina de Ebro
Village
Pina de Ebro is a town of the Ribera Baja del Ebro, in the province of Zaragoza, 40 km from the capital, with 2478 inhabitants, set at 161 metres of altitude in the Ebro depression, which borders it from west to east. Alfonso I the Battler reconquered it from the Muslims in 1127, and in 1164 it received lands and settlement charters. In 1174 Alfonso II gave Pina to his wife Sancha of Castile, and it was again granted as a royal dowry 57 years later; a great flood in 1259 devastated the town, so James I ceded land further inland to rebuild it. In the 15th century, the future Ferdinand the Catholic rested here two days before his coronation. Of the old parish church, destroyed in the bombing of the Civil War, only the Torre Vieja was left standing.

Settlement charter and fuero of Pina
Historical milestone
Alfonso I reconquered Pina in 1127 and in 1164 the villa received a charter of settlement and a fuero of its own. Its condition as a stronghold on the Ebro made it a bargaining piece: it was handed over as a dower to the queens consort in 1174 and again in 1231.
The 1259 flood and the reconstruction under Jaime I
Historical milestone
A great flood of the Ebro razed Pina in 1259 and obliged Jaime I to promote the reconstruction of the villa. A century later, the Black Death of 1350 depopulated several places in the surrounding area and lastingly altered the settlement of the riverbank.
Franciscan convent of Pina
Historical milestone
Between 1530 and 1539 a Franciscan convent was raised in Pina, one of the most notable conventual complexes of the lower riverbank. In 1495 the Moriscos represented more than forty per cent of the houses of the villa, which it lost with their expulsion.
