What to see and do in Velilla de Ebro

Velilla de Ebro
Village
Velilla de Ebro is a municipality of the province of Zaragoza, in the Ribera Baja del Ebro, with 208 inhabitants, situated next to the Roman site of the ancient Celsa. In 44 BC the colony of Victrix Iulia Lepida was founded there, on an Iberian settlement called Kelse, in honour of its founder, Lépido; after his exile in 36 BC it came to be called Colonia Iulia Victrix Celsa. Its ruins, declared a monumento histórico-artístico (a former Spanish heritage-protection category) in 1931, today house a branch of the Museum of Zaragoza devoted to the finds from the site. The street layout of the present village and its parish church recall its Arab past. It also preserves the mudéjar church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, from the 16th and 17th centuries, and remains of its old castle.
Roman Site of Celsa
Nature
The Roman site of Celsa extends alongside the Ebro, near Velilla de Ebro, over some forty hectares. The colony was founded around 44 BC by Marco Emilio Lépido under the name Colonia Victrix Iulia Lepida, and in 36 BC came to be called Colonia Iulia Victrix Celsa, latinizing the name of the ancient Iberian city of Kelse. It was abandoned shortly after AD 70, probably due to the rise of Caesaraugusta. It preserves landscaped terraces and a river quay, as well as dwellings such as the Casa de los Delfines, with opus signinum mosaics, an atrium and a triclinium, and the Casa de Hércules, with frescoes in the second Pompeian style, next to a necropolis. Declared a monumento histórico-artístico (a former Spanish heritage-protection category) in 1931, it is today part of the Museum of Zaragoza.
