What to see and do in Maluenda

Maluenda
Village
Municipality lying between 560 and 910 metres of altitude. Caliph Abderramán III camped in 933-934 before the walls of the castle of Maluenda during his campaigns against the rebels of the Marca Superior; the fortress, defended by al-Tuyibí himself, was taken by caliphal troops in 937, and Alfonso I el Batallador reconquered the town in 1120. It preserves a notable Mudejar ensemble, with the Andalusi-influenced minaret-tower of the church of Santa María (10th-11th centuries) and the ataurique plasterwork of the church of Santa Justa y Rufina.
Church of Maluenda
Monument
The church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora is the Catholic parish church of Maluenda, in the district of the Community of Calatayud (Zaragoza), and it is part of the most notable Mudejar ensembles in the area. It was built between the 13th and 14th centuries, possibly over the remains of an old mosque, and around 1400 it was transformed into a fortified church, with defensive corridors on its upper part built of rammed earth. Its tower preserves two phases: the lower body corresponds to an old Almohad minaret, above which the bell chamber was added in the 16th century. The portal, Gothic in style with a pointed arch, is covered by a large wooden eave that preserved polychromy. The church was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 18 September 2001.
Festivities of Maluenda

Fortress of Maluenda against Abderramán III
Monument
The caliph Abd al-Rahman III camped before the walls of this castle of the Jiloca valley during his campaigns against the rebels of the Upper March, and the caliphal troops occupied it in 937. Alfonso I incorporated it into Aragon in 1120; remains of rammed earth are left on the hill.
Irrigated fruit of the Jiloca
Food and drink
The market gardens irrigated by the Jiloca produce cherry, peach, pear and reineta and verde doncella apples, marketed by cooperatives of the town itself. The cherry harvest opens the fruit season of the comarca's valleys in May.
