What to see and do in Monreal de Ariza

Monreal de Ariza
Village
Monreal de Ariza is a municipality in the province of Zaragoza, on the border with Soria and on the banks of the Jalón river, within the comarca of the Comunidad de Calatayud and the historic Señorío de Ariza, a borderland between Castile and Aragon; it also includes the settlement of the Granja de San Pedro. Its castle was founded by Alfonso I the Battler in 1128 to hold back the advance of Alfonso VII of Castile, and in medieval documents it appears as «Mont Real aldea Farizie». On its territory, next to the Cerro Villar, lies the site of Arcóbriga, a Celtiberian and later Roman city built on a hill terraced in three levels, with a wall up to three metres thick and remains of Romanised baths, temples and dwellings. It now has 175 inhabitants.

Nature
Arcóbriga was a Celtiberian and, later, Roman city belonging to Tarraconensis. Its remains stand on the Cerro Villar, on the right bank of the river Jalón, about two kilometres west of the town centre of Monreal de Ariza, in the comarca of the Comunidad de Calatayud. The city occupies a hill terraced on three levels, girded by a wall that in some stretches reaches three metres in thickness; inside, baths, temples and Romanised dwellings have been identified. It was excavated between 1908 and 1911 by the Marquis of Cerralbo, whose work has since been reviewed. Declared a historic-artistic monument in 1931, it has been a Conjunto de Interés Cultural (site of cultural interest) since 2002, and the National Archaeological Museum holds its most important material remains.
