What to see and do in Alconchel de Ariza

Alconchel de Ariza
Village
Alconchel de Ariza, at 896 metres of altitude, in the comarca of the Comunidad de Calatayud, sits next to the sierra de Solorio, in a landscape of red clays more similar to that of the neighbouring lands of Soria and Alcarria than to the rest of Aragon, with a cold, dry climate suited to cereal farming. Its name is an Arabic place name formed on the Mozarabic Conchel, from the Latin concilium, council or assembly. In 1131 Alfonso I the Battler ceded it to Calatayud by charter, and in 1381 it passed to the Marquesado de Ariza. Between 1546 and 1558 san Pascual Bailón worked here as a shepherd, and the organ of the parish church was built between 1758 and 1759.
