Cimballa
Village
Cimballa is a municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca (Zaragoza), with 70 inhabitants (INE 2025) and an area of 31.90 km², situated at about 900 metres in altitude in the basin of the Piedra river and near the border with Guadalajara. Already mentioned in the Charter of Daroca of 1142, it was subject in the 12th century to the monastery of San Salvador de Oña; it preserves a Romanesque doorway in its church and castle remains from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its main feature is devotion to the Santísimo Misterio, a eucharistic relic linked to a supposed 14th-century miracle that was kept in the royal chapel of Zaragoza under three kings — Peter IV, John I and Martin I — until in 1410 its Gothic casket passed to the nearby Cistercian monastery of Piedra; the main festival is celebrated on 12 September in its honour.
