Abanto
Village
Abanto is a municipality of the comarca of the Comunidad de Calatayud, in the province of Zaragoza, set on a hill on the banks of the river Ortiz, south of the sierra de Pardos, at 922 metres of altitude. It now has 78 inhabitants. In its territory flint workshops from the 3rd century BC have been found, and next to its springs of waters known as 'exquisite' there is a brackish well worked since the Middle Ages to obtain salt, used by the Monasterio de Piedra. The village has been documented since 1131 as one of the towns under the jurisdiction of Calatayud. In 1219 the abbot of the Monasterio de Piedra exchanged Villafeliche for Abanto and Monterde with James I, and in 1303 James II granted the monastery the saltworks of Abanto.
