Castejón de Alarba
Village
Castejón de Alarba is a small municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, in the sierra de Pardos, at over 900 metres in altitude, with 75 inhabitants. El Cid passed through it during his exile, and today the village is included on the Camino del Cid; in the Middle Ages, as a hamlet, it belonged to the Comunidad de Aldeas de Calatayud, and the 1484 hearth census of the Cortes de Tarazona recorded 22 hearths there. Together with the neighbouring villages of Alarba, Olvés and Acered, it keeps up the centuries-old pilgrimage to the chapel of the Virgen de Semón, or de las Aguas, on a hill beside the rambla de Valcodo. It preserves the church of San Bartolomé, from the mid-17th century, and a public fountain from the 19th century; agriculture combines cereals with almond, cherry and walnut trees.
